Arizona nurses know what it takes to prepare someone to care for a patient. Nick Mansour ran a for-profit nursing college that the State of Arizona put on probation and was sued by his students — and now he wants to manage your tax dollars.
Dear Arizona,
We are nurses. We worked through long clinical rotations, heavy coursework, and licensing exams to earn the right to care for people in our communities. We take that responsibility seriously, and we expect the schools that train us to take it just as seriously.
That is why Nick Mansour's record at Arizona College of Nursing concerns us.
In May 2022 the Arizona State Board of Nursing placed the College on probation for a minimum of 36 months — one of the most serious sanctions a state nursing board can issue against a program short of withdrawing its approval entirely. They were put on probation for multiple serious issues, including hiring unqualified instructors, allowing unsupervised clinicals, and having students go thousands of dollars in debt for programs that the students did not even complete.
They were also sued multiple times — including in a 2021 class-action lawsuit whereby students allege that the Arizona College misappropriated over $2 million in COVID-relief funds. Other lawsuits allege predatory practices of enrolling students who would not be able to get certifications — such as in one instance where a student went thousands of dollars into debt despite having a felony, something that would preclude her from getting a license.
Nick Mansour was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arizona College of Nursing during that period. This was a for-profit college. Students were paying tuition and taking on debt while the program responsible for preparing them sat under state sanction. The College had graduation and NCLEX scores below the national average. This pattern shows that Nick Mansour cared more about making a profit for himself — no matter who he hurt financially — rather than helping the students that he was supposed to protect.
The office of State Treasurer is a job about stewardship of other people's money. It requires someone whose record shows they put the people depending on them ahead of their own return. We have looked at Nick Mansour's record and we do not see that.
We are asking our colleagues, and every Arizonan who has ever been cared for by a nurse, to vote for Elijah Norton for State Treasurer this November.
